Full Privacy Statement

This Privacy Policy of United Way for Southeastern Michigan (“United Way” “we”, “us”, or “our”) describes its policy for treatment of personal information (as defined below) on the website www.uwsemecetest.wpengine.com (“Site”), regardless of the platform on which it is used. This Privacy Policy does not apply to United Way’s practices for collecting and using personal information offline or from websites other than the Site. “You” in this Privacy Policy refers to you personally.

United Way recognizes the importance of protecting information we may collect from visitors to our Site. Our policy is to use the information we collect from visitors to our sites for internal purposes only, and we strive to maintain reasonable and appropriate security measures to keep this information private.

Users can visit the site without providing us with any personal information. If one chooses to give us personal information via the Internet for the purposes of, for example, correspondence, processing an order, or providing a subscription to a publication, then it is our intent to let you know how we will use such information. What is “personal information” and what personal information does United Way collect?

Personal information United Way collects includes personal information you provide voluntarily. If you place an order, sign up to volunteer, request to receive a newsletter, or otherwise interact with us via the Site, we may request personal information such as, for example, your name, address, email address, and phone number. If you choose to contact us via email, website-enabled chat features, or other means, the information you provide may constitute personal information.

United Way also automatically collects navigational information related to your use of the Site using analytics trackers, such as those provided by Google Analytics. Information collected may include your internet protocol address, location-based information, browser type, time and date of access and pages accessed, linking information, click stream, page visits, page views, website log files, and other website analytics information. If such navigational information becomes reasonably identifiable to you or is reasonably identifiable to a particular device, it will be considered personal information for purposes of this Privacy Policy. You may have the opportunity to conduct financial transaction using the Site, such as donations or registration fees. Please note that we do not collect sensitive credit card information that may be processed in connection with your donations made in connection with the Site. We outsource processing of personal information, including credit card information, you provide in connection with donations made through the Site to third-party vendors which we understand to be compliant with appropriate standards, including Payment Card Industry standards for security.

The Site is not directed to children younger than thirteen years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of thirteen.

How does United Way use the information it collects?

We use personal information collected on the Site for the following purposes:

  • To respond to inquiries from users
  • To provide information about the proper use or misuse of the Site.
  • To process technical or administrative issues or to communicate regarding those issues.
  • To improve, expand, or otherwise adjust our services.
  • To comply with applicable law, including law related to charitable donations.
  • There are also circumstances in which we may share or transfer your personal information, which are discussed below.

Under what circumstances does United Way disclose or transfer personal information to others?

There are circumstances where we will transfer and/or disclose your personal information to third parties. Those circumstances, subject to the limits of applicable law, are as follows:

  • Affiliate and Partner Organizations: United Way may transfer personal information to its affiliate and partner organizations for purposes related to United Way service offerings as such offerings may change and develop over time.
  • Site Consultants and Service Providers: United Way may transfer personal information to third-party service providers, including those that may be hosting or housing data on behalf of United Way or otherwise acting on its behalf as a data center (such as providers of hosting, cloud, technology outsourcing and support services).

Additionally, USWEM may disclose personal information to the extent that our service providers require access to our databases, or the information contained in our databases, to service United Way and the Site.

  • Donor Recognition: United Way may share donor information for recognition and awards purposes, if requested to do so by the donor.
  • Legal Compulsion and United Way’s Protection: United Way reserves the right to release personal information in response to a subpoena or otherwise when we reasonably believe that the law requires us to do so or when we believe it is necessary to protect and/or enforce the rights, property interests, or safety of United Way, our users, customers or others.
  • As Otherwise Allowed by Law: We may transfer personal information to third parties where we are expressly authorized by applicable law to do so.

Does this site use cookies?

Certain sections of the United Way web site use “cookies” to store user information. A cookie is a small string of text that a website can send to your browser. A cookie cannot retrieve any other data from your hard drive, pass on computer viruses, or capture your email address. No, United Way does not share your personal information with third-party advertisers.

How does United Way keep my personal information secure?

Although we cannot guarantee that our or our vendors’ servers are impenetrable, we have attempted to establish and implement reasonable physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online. Where we use outside vendors to collect, store, or process data, we attempt to use vendors who also establish and implement reasonable procedures.

Does this site link to any third-party sites?

The Site may link to third-party sites. When using third-party sites (for example, sites that take credit cards or otherwise process transactions), you should review the privacy policies of such third-party sites to understand how they collect and use personal information.

How long do you keep my information?

United Way keeps personal information for as long as we deem it useful to use, and for as long as applicable law allows us to maintain it.

Site users have the right to request that their information be modified or deleted from our files. We will attempt to honor these requests, subject to applicable law and our judgment that the information is not important for us to maintain for our internal record-keeping purposes. United Way uses SSL encryption for all financial transactions to protect personal information.

If you provide an email address or other personal information (excluding financial information) when you visit our site, we may enter such information into one of our data bases so we can contact you to ask your input, provide information about our programs and events, and request contributions. All electronic communications from us do contain a link to a unsubscribe form and you may elect to unsubscribe from any or all of our communications at any time.

The only exception is “Comments” which are posted publicly using a link to the user’s Facebook or other social media profiles.

Donor Privacy Policy

This Donor Privacy Policy explains our privacy practices that specifically relate to donors. It is supplemental to our general Privacy Policy, which explains our privacy practices generally. Donors should refer to this Donor Privacy Policy and the general Privacy Policy for a complete understanding of our practices.

We will not sell, share or trade donors’ names or personal information with third-party advertisers, and will not send mailings to our donors on behalf of other organizations. Except as described below, all personal information volunteered by donors as part of the donation process is for use by authorized employees, contractors, board members, advisors and volunteers for purposes related to the United Way for Southeastern Michigan(“United Way” “we”, “us”, or “our”), which may include processing donations, expressing appreciation and providing receipts, record keeping, reporting as required by law, internal analytic purposes, further contact with donors for additional fundraising, and donor recognition in United Way’s publicly displayed materials. There are circumstances where we will transfer and/or disclose donors’ personal information to third parties. Those circumstances, subject to the limits of applicable law, are as follows:

  • The Site Consultants and Service Providers: United Way transfers personal information to third-party service providers that may be hosting or housing data on behalf of United Way or otherwise acting on its behalf as a data center (such as providers of hosting, cloud, technology outsourcing and support services). Additionally, United Way may disclose personal information to the extent that our service providers require access to our databases, or the information contained in our databases, to provide services to United Way.

  • As Otherwise Allowed by Law: We may transfer personal information to third parties where we are expressly authorized by applicable law to do so.
    United Way gives donors the opportunity to remain anonymous and to decline public and/or private recognition. Donors may request in writing that their names not be published in United Way materials or publicly (e.g., on donor lists).

United Way will make reasonable efforts to discontinue or change the method used to contact a donor after processing that person’s written request directed to United Way.

We reserve the right to change the Donor Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will note the most recent date of revision at the top of this policy.

This policy applies to all information received as part of the donation process by United Way, both online and offline, on any platform, as well as any electronic, written, or oral communications.

Online donations to United Way may be processed by a third-party payment vendor. United Way cannot control how donor data is used by third-party service providers when an online donation is made to United Way via a third-party service provider. When using third-party sites you should review the privacy policies of such parties’ sites to understand how they collect and use personal information.

Donor Bill of Rights

PHILANTHROPY is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

  1. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  2. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  3. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  4. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  5. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
  6. To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  7. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  8. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  9. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  10. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

Mobile Donations

If you donate to United Way for Southeastern Michigan via your mobile phone, a one-time donation of $10 will be added to your mobile phone bill or deducted from your prepaid balance. Message and Data Rates May Apply. All charges are billed by and payable to your mobile service provider. Service is available on Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. All purchases must be authorized by account holder. By participating you certify that you are 18 yrs or older and/or have parental permission.

  • Injunctive Relief. In the event equitable relief is sought, each party hereby irrevocably submits to the personal jurisdiction of such court.
  • Limitations of Actions. WITHOUT LIMITING THE EFFECT OF ANY DISCLAIMER CONTAINED HEREIN, ANY CAUSE OF ACTION YOU MAY HAVE WITH RESPECT TO YOUR USE OF THE SITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CLAIM OR CAUSE OF ACTION ARISES.
  • Choice of Law. This Agreement shall be governed and interpreted in accordance with the substantive law of the State of Michigan without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

  • Notice and Electronic Communications. Except as otherwise expressly specified in the Terms of Use, all notices, permissions and approvals hereunder shall be in writing and shall be deemed to have been given only upon:

      2. The fifth business day after mailing;
      3. The first business day after sending by email;

    1. The second business day after being sent by internationally-recognized overnight courier.

    It is agreed that all agreements, notices, disclosures, and other communications provided in accordance with the Terms of Use satisfy any legal requirement that such communications be in writing. It is agreed that a printed version of this Terms of Use and/or any notice given in electronic form shall be admissible in judicial or administrative proceedings based upon or relating to this Terms of Use to the same extent and subject to the same conditions as other business documents and records originally generated and maintained in printed form.

Mobile Terms of Service for Connect4Care (C4C)

  1. When you opt-in to the Connect4Care service, also known as C4C, we will send you an SMS message to confirm your signup.
  2. You can cancel the SMS service at any time. Just text “STOP” to 4CARE. After you send the SMS message “STOP” to us, we will send you an SMS message to confirm that you have been unsubscribed. After this, you will no longer receive SMS messages from us. If you want to join again, just sign up as you did the first time and we will start sending SMS messages to you again.
